This round is a two-hour problem-solving contest, written simultaneously, after school hours, at various centres throughout the country.
All participants write the same paper.
To encourage younger programmers, certificates are awarded to each grade.
Each school will receive 8 certificates to be awarded as follows:
- First in Grade: Grades 12,11,10,9,8 and below (5 certificates)
- Overall in school: First, second and third in school irrespective of the grade (3 certificates)
At least one learner will therefore receive two certificates: First in grade and First in school.
Selection for the Third Round is strictly on merit and is open to all grades.
Each participating learner should have access to a computer with a programming language of his/her choice during the two hours of the Second Round.
Where schools do not have any such facilities, other localities with the required facilities (e.g another school or a tertiary institution) will be acceptable provided the centre is registered beforehand.
The teacher in charge need not be an expert in computer languages. If the teacher cannot rank the results, the entries may be sent to the Computer Olympiad office for ranking.
Where possible, answers should be graded at the centres. The answers and the source-code of the top pupil at each school must be forwarded to the Computer Olympiad office. A number of the most outstanding participants will be invited to the Third Round irrespective of their grade.
