This round comprises a two-hour problem-solving contest, written simultaneously, after school hours, at various centres throughout the country.
To encourage younger programmers, there are two divisions:
START: Grades 7 to 10: For beginner programmers
OPEN: Grades 11 and 12 – and any younger students who wish to participate
A learner has to participate in the OPEN Division in order to qualify for the Third Round.
Each school receives 6 certificates; to be awarded as follows:
START Division: First, second and third in the school
OPEN Division: First, second and third in the school
Each participating learner should have access to a computer with a programming language of his/her choice during the two hours of the second round.
Where schools do not have any such facilities, other localities with the required facilities (e.g another school or a tertiary institution) will be acceptable provided the centre is registered beforehand.
The teacher in charge need not be an expert in computer languages. If the teacher cannot rank the results, the entries may be sent to the Computer Olympiad office for ranking.
Where possible, answers should be graded at the centres. The answers and the source-code of the top pupil at each school must be forwarded to the Computer Olympiad office. A number of the most outstanding participants will be invited to the third round.
