First Round

The first round takes place at schools all over South Africa at the same time. The question paper can be answered WITHOUT a computer using only PEN AND PAPER, and will require not more than one hour after school. The questions will cover general knowledge about IT and involve pen and paper programming tasks such as writing a program to guide a robot through a maze.

Many schools are using the First Round as an aptitude test to see whether learners should pursue a career in IT or not, and to help them make the appropriate subject choices.

Each school will receive 8 certificates to be awarded as follows:

  • First in Grade: Grades 12,11,10,9,8 and below (5 certificates)
  • Overall in school: First, second and third in school irrespective of the grade (3 certificates)

At least one learner will therefore receive two certificates First in grade and First in school.
