First Round

The first round takes place at schools all over South Africa at the same time. The question paper can be answered WITHOUT a computer using only PEN AND PAPER, and will require not more than one hour after school. The questions will cover general knowledge about IT and involve pen and paper programming tasks such as writing a program to guide a robot through a maze.

Many schools are using the First Round as an aptitude test to see whether learners should pursue a career in ICT or not.  For this reason the First Rounds is offered in two divisions:

JUNIOR:  Grades 7 to 9 (to help with subject choices)
SENIOR:  Grades 10 to 12 (to help with career choices)

Each school receives 6 certificates; to be awarded as follows:

Junior Division:  First, second and third in the school
Senior Division: First, second and third in the school
